S. 876—The Human Cloning Ban and Stem Cell Research Protection Act of 2005

On April 21, 2005, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced S. 876, the Human Cloning Ban and Stem Cell Research Protection Act of 2005. The bill would prohibit reproductive cloning, but permit the use of cloning technology, known as somatic cell nuclear transfer, to derive human embryonic stem cells. S. 876 is identical to legislation introduced by Senator Hatch during the 108th Congress. The bill has 11 cosponsors and was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. A companion measure, H.R. 1822, was introduced by Representative Mary Bono (R-CA) on April 26. The House bill has four cosponsors and was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
