S. 852—The Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act of 2005

On April 19, 2005, Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) introduced S. 852, the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act of 2005. The bill would establish a trust fund to compensate victims of asbestos exposure. The bill includes a provision that would require NIH to enter into a contract with the IOM to conduct a study on the causal link between asbestos exposure and other cancers, including colorectal, laryngeal, esophageal, pharyngeal, and stomach cancers, except for mesothelioma and lung cancers. S. 852 was referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
