S. 799—The Prevention of Childhood Obesity Act

On April 14, Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) introduced S. 799, the Prevention of Childhood Obesity Act. The bill would amend the Public Health Service Act to provide for the coordination of the Federal Government policies and activities to prevent obesity in childhood, and would provide for State childhood obesity prevention and control programs. It would also establish grant programs to prevent childhood obesity within homes, schools, and communities. The Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in accordance with NIH’s Strategic Plan for Obesity Research, would be required to expand and intensify research that addresses the prevention of childhood obesity. S. 799 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP).
