S. 658—The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2005

On March 17, 2005, Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) introduced S. 658, the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2005. The bill would prohibit both reproductive cloning and the use of cloning technology to derive stem cells. S. 658 and H.R. 1357 bills are similar, except that the Senate version of the bill would require a study by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to assess whether new medical developments would require amendments to the bill. The Senate version of the bill is identical to the cloning bill which passed in the House of Representatives during the 108th Congress. S. 658 has 28 cosponsors and was referred to the Senate HELP Committee.
