S. 471—The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005

On February 28, 2005, Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) introduced S. 471, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005. The bill would require NIH to fund research utilizing human embryonic stem cells regardless of the date such cells were derived. NIH would be required to publish implementing guidelines within 60 days of enactment. A companion measure, H.R. 810, was introduced in the House on February 15. Other principal cosponsors of S. 471 include Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT); Gordon Smith (R-OR); Dianne Feinstein (D-CA); Tom Harkin (D-IA); and Edward Kennedy (D-MA). The bill was referred to the Senate HELP Committee.
