Ozone Nation: EPA Standard Panned by the People Bob Weinhold Abstract After a decade of deliberations and review of more than 1,700 new studies, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the new primary standard for ground-level ozone in March 2008. The new standard, 75 ppb, is being assailed from all sides—stakeholders, government, and environmental, public health, and medical groups—for different reasons. Some critics point to the hundreds of counties in the country that would be thrown out of compliance by the new standard, while other critics claim the new standard is not low enough to protect public health. The review cycle for the new standard is scheduled to conclude in 2013. Meanwhile, congressional action or court decisions could force the EPA to revise the standard.
