S. 1734—The Prostate Research, Imaging, and Men’s Education Act

On June 28, 2007, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) introduced S. 1734, the Prostate Research, Imaging, and Men’s Education Act. The bill would require the Secretary of HHS, acting through the Director of NIH and in consultation with the Secretary of Defense, to carry out a program to expand and intensify research to develop innovative advanced imaging technologies for prostate cancer detection, diagnosis, and treatment comparable to state-of-the-art mammography technologies. The bill would also require the Secretary to carry out a public awareness and education campaign and, in coordination with the Secretary of Defense, to carry out research to develop an improved prostate cancer screening blood test using in-vitro detection. S. 1734 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). The House companion, H.R. 3689, was introduced by Representative Howard Berman (D-CA) on September 27, 2007.
