Sound Science: Ferries Keep Watch on Coastal Waters Sound Science: Ferries Keep Watch on Coastal Waters

Victoria McGovern

Abstract

Researchers in North Carolina are developing a new approach to understanding the behavior of that state's Pamlico Sound. A team of scientists has put together an innovative project to use North Carolina's extensive coastal ferry system to constantly monitor water properties of nearby rivers and sounds. Data on baseline water quality as well as information on nutrient runoff, storm impacts, and other factors will provide insight into how to ameliorate the environmental and health effects of ecological change along the coast.
