The Human Genome Project was an example of science on a scale arguably not seen since the Apollo Space Program. The fact that it was completed two years ahead of schedule might well be attributed to the intense competition between the NIH on one hand and J. Craig Venter and Celera Genomics on the other. The project also had the advantage of being an incredibly high profile effort that was able to draw the attention of not only most life scientists but also a significant portion of the public.
