Updated Adult and Adolescent Treatment Guidelines Now Available!
Just in time for World AIDS Day (December 1), the latest version of the Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in HIV-1-Infected Adults and Adolescents has been released. The update includes new information on:
- Lab tests to run during the initial clinic visit for newly diagnosed patients
- Updated recommendations on when to start treatment
- Management of treatment-experienced patients, including suggestions on prescribing the recently FDA-approved drugs, maraviroc & raltegravir
Changes to the guidelines are summarized in the "What's New in the Document?" section located at the front of the guidelines. The changes are also highlighted in yellow throughout the text and tables.
The updated guidelines are available for download from the Adult and Adolescent Guidelines section of AIDSinfo. You can also order them by mail or e-mail from AIDSinfo's Order Publications section.
New for World AIDS Day: Redesigned Guidelines Pages!
In commemoration of World AIDS Day and the release of the updated Adult Guidelines, AIDSinfo is proud to reveal a new look for the Guidelines pages! The new design gives users direct access to drug information, clinical trials, fact sheets, and other information related to each guideline.

HIV/AIDS Information Available on Second Life
As a contribution to World AIDS Day 2007, the Specialized Information Services (SIS) Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has created an HIV/AIDS exhibit in the virtual world of Second Life.
Second Life (SL) is a 3-D virtual world entirely created by its Residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by millions of Residents from around the globe. (You have to be at least 18 years of age to join SL.)
The exhibit, located in the "SL Health Information Outreach Lab" parcel on Health Information Island, includes a display of NLM's, NIH's, and other government resources on HIV/AIDS. The exhibit allows SL users to access government Web sites with authoritative information about HIV/AIDS for patients, families, and the general public.
Featured Web sites include AIDSinfo, AIDSinfo en español (infoSIDA), NLM's AIDS Portal, MedlinePlus, AIDS.gov, HIVTest.org, and others. A number of national and international medical libraries collaborating on Health Information Island will hold special activities on December 1 in commemoration of World AIDS Day 2007.
Statement from Drs. Zerhouni, Whitescarver, and Fauci of the NIH on World AIDS Day
NIH Director Dr. Elias Zerhouni, NIH Associate Director for AIDS Research and Director of the Office of AIDS Research Dr. Jack Whitescarver, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Anthony Fauci have issued a joint statement on World AIDS Day 2007.
NIDA to Launch Educational Campaign for Hispanic Youth on World AIDS Day
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) announced that it will launch a national public service campaign to educate Hispanic teens on the link between noninjection drug use and HIV transmission.
The campaign, which will begin on World AIDS Day, will feature television, internet, and print components, along with community events and partnerships. This holiday season, the campaign's public service announcement is running on TV screens in New York City's Times Square and inside New York City buses that travel through areas with large Hispanic populations.
