National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS
Awareness Day We are approaching
the quarter century mark of when HIV/AIDS presented itself as a
life-threatening health issue. In the last 10 years great strides have been
made in significantly reducing the progression of HIV to AIDS thanks to
highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) drugs. In spite of this
progress, the proportion of women being diagnosed with AIDS has more than
tripled from 8% of all new AIDS diagnoses in the United States in 1985 to
27% of all new AIDS diagnoses in 2004.
On March 10, 2006, the
Office of Women’s Health will sponsor the first annual National Women and
Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This is a day to help raise awareness among
women and girls about HIV/AIDS, to stress the importance of knowing your
HIV status, and to promote healthy behaviors that reduce the risk of HIV
infection.
