New Castle, DE - State, federal, local and voluntary agencies are working together to provide assistance to families and individuals who suffered damage from Tropical Storm Henri and Hurricane Isabel.
Recovery services summary as of 7:00 a.m., Friday, November 7, 2003:
- 659 residents have applied for assistance through the FEMA toll-free registration number 800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY: 800-462-7585, and the Disaster Recovery Center.
- 99 percent of damage inspections issued have been completed.
- $1,036,942 has been disbursed to the victims from the Individuals and Households Program.
- 141 SBA loan applications received.
- $2,456,300.in Small Business Administration (SBA) loans have been approved.
- 761 people visited the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs), which have now been closed. Residents may still call the 1-800-621-FEMA number to register for assistance or with questions
In addition, FEMA has received 183 applications for public assistance. This assistance is earmarked for repair or replacement of public facilities such as buildings, roads, bridges, and utilities for state and local government and certain private nonprofit organizations that operate essential services of a government nature. The Public Assistance Program also provides reimbursement for certain debris removal and emergency protective measures.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
