New Castle, DE - State, federal, local and voluntary agencies are working together to provide assistance to families and individuals who suffered damage from Tropical Storm Henri and Hurricane Isabel.
Recovery services summary as of 7:00 a.m., Friday, October 24, 2003:
- 628 residents have applied for assistance through the FEMA toll free registration number 800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY: 800-462-7585, and the Disaster Recovery Center.
- 98 percent of damage inspections issued have been completed.
- $956,264 has been disbursed to the victims from the Individuals and Households Program.
- $1,288,400 in Small Business Administration (SBA) loans have been approved.
- 123 SBA loan applications received.
- 672 people have visited the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) including one that was initially opened in Sussex County. The New Castle County DRC remains open for one more week until October 31 and is located near Wilmington. The DRC is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mon. through Sat. at the St. Marks United Methodist Church at 1700 Limestone Rd.
In addition, FEMA has received 181 applications for public assistance. This assistance is earmarked for repair or replacement of public facilities such as buildings, roads, bridges, utilities for state and local government and certain private nonprofit organizations that operate essential services of a government nature. The Public Assistance Program also provides reimbursement for certain emergency protective measures.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
