Review of Extramural Research Grant Applications

NINDS Scientific Review Branch
The mission of the NINDS Scientific Review Branch is to provide unbiased and expert peer review of grant applications and contract proposals and to provide advice and assistance to the NINDS extramural programs.

NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR)
The Center for Scientific Review (CSR) is one of the NIH components that manage the scientific review groups (SRG) that evaluate investigator-initiated applications. The initial step of the peer review process takes place in Scientific Review Groups (SRGs) that are managed by the various NIH Institutes and Centers. The links below provide access to all SRGs including those managed by NINDS.

  • Scientific Review Groups
  • Study Section Rosters
A complete listing of rosters for the Scientific Review Groups (SRG) managed by CSR is provided below. Please review the CSR Reorganization Activities
    • Regular Standing Study Sections and Continuing SEPs
These study sections review most of the Investigator Initiated Research Grant (R01) applications (and sometimes review small numbers of R03, R21, Conference, AREA and K applications, amongst others).
    • Fellowship Study Sections
These study sections review individual fellowship grant applications - F30, F31, F32, F33. An exception is for behavioral science applications that are reviewed by the regular standing study sections.
    • SBIR/STTR Study Sections
Small business innovation research and small business technology transfer grant application. review panels are assembled on an ad hoc basis for each meeting; therefore, their designations and scientific emphasis may change with each review cycle.
    • All Other CSR Special Emphasis Panels
CSR runs a number of "one time Special Emphasis Panel" meetings with rosters tailored to the applications under consideration. If you cannot find your panel by searching one of the above links, you will find it here. Only the current rosters are provided 30 days before the meeting.

National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council (NANDSC)
NANDSC exists to (1) to advise the Institute on policy and procedures affecting the extramural research programs and (2) to provide a second level of review for all grant and cooperative agreement applications considered by the Institute for funding.

Review of Intramural Research

NINDS Board of Scientific Counselors
