New Brochure Available for People with Diabetes and High Blood Pressure
NKDEP's new Make the Kidney Connection brochure is now available! The free brochure, suitable for diverse patient populations, outlines the increased risk for kidney disease among those with diabetes and high blood pressure. It encourages people at risk to talk to their health care provider and get tested for kidney disease. The brochure can be used as a tool to facilitate communication in the health care setting, or as a take-home material for patients at risk. View or download Make the Kidney Connection at www.nkdep.nih.gov/resources/index.htm#patients.

If you are interested in ordering large quantities of the brochure, or promoting it among your organization, please contact Christen Horn at 202-729-4245 or christen.horn@ogilvypr.com.

In addition, we'd like to thank Coordinating Panel member Karen Basinger and the American Dietetic Association for helping us test the draft brochure with their patients earlier this summer.

Creatinine Standardization Recommendations Now Online
Recommendations for partners integral to the implementation of the Creatinine Standardization Program are now available on the NKDEP Laboratory Professionals section of the website. These recommendations have been updated since their original publication in Clinical Chemistry 2006; 52(1): 5-18. Recommendations are available for:

  • IVD manufacturers
  • Clinical laboratories
  • Proficiency testing and external quality assessment scheme providers
  • National metrology institutes, reference laboratories, and JCTLM organizational members
  • Pharmacists and authorized drug prescribers
  • Software developers

If you are interested in receiving periodic electronic updates about the Creatinine Standardization Program, contact us at csp@info.niddk.nih.gov or sign up on the Laboratory Professionals page of the NKDEP website.

NKDEP Coordinating Panel and Working Groups Update
The NKDEP Coordinating Panel will meet in Bethesda, MD on October 20. Coordinating Panel members will talk with Dr. Andrew Narva, the new director of NKDEP, about the strategic direction of the program as well as their own organization's involvement with NKDEP. A list of Coordinating Panel members is now available on the NKDEP site at www.nkdep.nih.gov/about/panel.htm.

Other recent meetings include NKDEP's Laboratory Working Group (LWG), which held its annual in-person meeting and Manufacturers' Forum during the AACC conference in July. The LWG discussed creatinine standardization issues related to health system pharmacists, lab reports, pediatric care, and whole blood devices. The Manufacturers' Forum reviewed and discussed the implications of the Creatinine Standardization Program for the IVD industry.

Family Reunion Initiative Wraps Up for the Summer
The NKDEP African-American Family Reunion Initiative has completed this year's promotional outreach activities. Early results show almost 50,000 visits to the Family Reunion website, with 21,000 downloads of the Family Reunion Health Guide. We also distributed more than 12,000 hard copies of the Guide with the help of a diverse group of organizations.

Thank you to all of the organizations that worked with us to let their members know about the initiative. You can continue to access the Family Reunion site and partner materials throughout the year at www.nkdep.nih.gov/familyreunion.
