Pediatrics at the Clinical Center

Because more children are taking part in clinical research studies at the Clinical Center, we offer complete services for pediatric patients.

Pediatric Inpatient Service

1 SW
1 SW is a behavioral health research unit of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The unit's focus is the care of children and adolescents with childhood onset schizophrenia (COS) and mood disorders.

1 SW is an 8-bed unit with a State-accredited school. Children on the unit can enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities, including activities in the gym and playroom, "caring canine visits," art therapy, music therapy, and storytelling. The Nutrition Department serves special diets and meals. Like a family, staff and children eat together at the unit's dining room table.

1 Northwest
1 Northwest is a family-centered pediatric unit serving many institutes of the National Institutes of Health. Staff members strive to make your child's stay as home-like as possible. They also encourage your involvement as parent or guardian in your child's care. We prefer that one parent or family member over the age of 18 stays overnight with patients under the age of 18.

Pediatric Day Hospital
The Pediatric Day Hospital is located on 1 Northwest. It provides skilled care for children who need special care but do not need to be admitted as inpatients. Services include:

  • medication administration
  • patient and family teaching
  • blood and urine testing

A nearby playroom is a comfortable place for children and their families.
