OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Persons who lost work because of Hurricane Floyd in September have until November 1, 1999 to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA).The deadline is for persons in the Maryland counties of Anne Arundel, Calvert, Caroline, Cecil, Charles, Harford, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, St. Mary's, and Talbot.
Persons must apply during the open application period, even if they are not certain if they qualify, and do not expect to receive benefits immediately.
The program extends coverage to people ineligible for unemployment compensation under the regular state unemployment insurance program. Those who may qualify include self-employed persons, farm workers, farm and ranch owners, agricultural producers, aquacultural operators, commission-paid employees and others not covered by regular programs.
Persons applying for unemployment benefits should be able to provide proof of past earnings at the time they file a claim. Claims may be filed at any Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation (DLLR) office. DLLR will also assist claimants in finding reemployment through testing, counseling, and placement services. Applicants may call DLLR at 1-800-827-4839.
Everyone who was adversely affected by the storms and flooding occurring between September 16-20, 1999 is urged to register with FEMA at 1-800-462-9029. Registration and Helpline numbers are available between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., EST, seven days a week.
