Technique

The exercise testing lab of the MCRU contains a variety of equipment used to assess personal fitness level. We conduct VO2max test which measures the maximal oxygen consumption and heart rate during intense physical activity. These tests are performed by either incrementally increasing the speed and incline of a treadmill or by increasing the resistance of a stationary bicycle. During the test, subjects are outfitted with either a mask or mouth piece connected to a gas analyzer to measure breathing rate and the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the inspired and expired air. Using the analyzer measurements, the maximal oxygen consumption and other respiratory parameters can be computed. Subjects also wear a 12-Lead ECG to monitor heart rate, a pulse oximeter to measure blood oxygen level, and an arm cuff used to measure blood pressure.

The exercise testing lab is also used to monitor respiratory status and metabolic rate during studies involving longer exercise interventions. The exercise lab also houses portable indirect calorimetry units and various physical activity monitors which are used to assess energy expenditure and physical activity in a free living environment.
