Hi, I’m Dr. Griff Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the National Institutes of Health. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Did you know that diabetes affects more than 20 million people in this country? Most of them have type 2 diabetes and one-third of them don’t know it because diabetes doesn’t always cause symptoms.

If you are African American, overweight, inactive, over 45, or if you have high blood pressure, or a family member with diabetes, you’re at increased risk, and you should get tested for diabetes. Ask your doctor for a fasting blood glucose test.

For more tips, visit the website yourdiabetesinfo.org or call 1-888-693-NDEP. This is Dr. Griff Rodgers. Join me next week for more “Healthy Moments.”
