Allan F. Mirsky, Ph.D., Senior Investigator

Dr. Mirsky received his B.S. degree from the City College of New York and his M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees from Yale University. While at Yale he worked with Haldor Rosvold, Karl Pribram and Frank Beach on physiological factors underlying aggressive behavior in monkeys, as well as on the effects of neuropsychiatric disorders and brain lesions on cognitive behaviors in patients. Dr. Mirsky was a Research Psychologist in NIMH from 1954 to 1961 and a faculty member at Boston University from 1961 to 1980. He returned to NIMH as a Senior Investigator in 1980. Dr. Mirsky has been Presidents of the International Neuropsychological Society and of the Division of Physiological and Comparative Psychology of the American Psychological Association, and is currently President of the Division of Clinical Neuropsychology of the American Psychological. His research involves the neurobiological antecedents of attention disorder, with special emphasis on environmental factors, as well as on schizophrenia and idiopathic generalized seizure disorders.

Research Interests:
The psychology, neuropsychology, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy and neuropsychiatric relevance of disordered attention. Genetic and familial influences on attentional behavior in seizure disorders, with particular interest in idiopathic generalized epilepsies.

The cognitive and developmental antecedents of aggressive and violent behavior.

Influence of environmental factors (including lead intoxication, parasite infection, and effects of poverty, generally) on the development of cognitive competence, especially as these factors interact with neuropsychiatric diatheses.
