Since 1982, Dr. Trey Sunderland has conducted research with Alzheimer's disease patients,
elderly depressed subjects, and normal control subjects at the National Institute of Mental Health.
Currently chief of NIMH's Geriatric Psychiatry Branch, he is engaged in advancing the
understanding of (1) the biology of Alzheimer's disease, (2) various means of diagnosis,
and (3) the new and more targeted therapies that are emerging for the treatment of the
underlying biochemical changes associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Sunderland received a B.A. in psychology at Harvard College before obtaining his M.D. degree at George Washington University in 1978. His postdoctoral training was first in medicine at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and then in psychiatry at Harvard's McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts. He has written more than 250 scientific articles, book chapters, and reviews, and coauthored Aging and Mental Health with Robert Butler and Myrna Lewis. Dr. Sunderland also served as chairman of the NIMH institutional review board for a period of 10 years and currently is a member of 14 editorial boards.
Among the honors and awards that Dr. Sunderland has received are the 2000 Exemplary Psychiatrist Award by NIMH, the 1998 National Institutes of Health Director's Award, the 1994 Health Advocate Award of the American Occupational Therapy Association, a 1993 Outstanding Service Award from the Public Health Service, and a 1990 Public Health Service Commendation Medal.
