Schmidt Abstract image credits: Chris Reuther/EHP ; photos, top to bottom: Photodisc, Rubberball, Photodisc After a lengthy multistakeholder review process, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is preparing to release, in draft form, unprecedented guidelines for the assessment of children's risk from exposure to environmental chemicals. The guidelines provide new adjustment factors for assessing risk from mutagenic carcinogens for two age groups of children. These factors are to be implemented by EPA scientists and that represent a shift toward a more method-specific process for dose-response assessment. The EPA and its Science Advisory Board are working to construct recommended approaches to allow the guidelines to reflect progress in risk assessment methods as such developments are made.
