Fuel For The Long Haul: Diesel In America Bob Weinhold Abstract image credit: PhotoDisc Although engine designers are working hard to develop vehicles that use alternative fuels, few of their innovations can match the power, durability, and efficiency of the diesel engine. Diesel does have its drawbacks, however. Exposure to exhausts containing diesel particulate matter (DPM) is considered a primary cause of some human health effects including cancer and respiratory disease. Researchers are studying DPM's composition and its interactions with other atmospheric chemicals, and developing better methods for measuring airborne DPM. As more is learned about this pollutant, regulators are implementing new rules on DPM emissions from sources including marine diesel engines and mining equipment. To reduce emissions at their source, low-sulfur fuels and new emission control devices are in the works. The full version of this article is available for free in HTML or PDF formats. |
