New Resource Available for Diabetes Educators
In response to a need expressed by diabetes educators, a key audience for NKDEP, we have developed a Quick Reference on UACR and GFR fact sheet to provide information on two important kidney measures: urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR). For each measure, the fact sheet addresses topics such as criteria for chronic kidney disease (CKD); interpretation of test results; and benefits, recommendations, and warnings.

The piece can be downloaded at www.nkdep.nih.gov/resources/uacr_gfr_quickreference.htm.

Print copies will be available to order by Spring 2008.

NKDEP Convenes Coordinating Panel for Annual Meeting
NKDEP held its annual Coordinating Panel (CP) meeting on October 22, 2007 in Bethesda, MD. This was the first meeting since the CP's reorganization. Rather than membership based on representation from key organizations, the group is now composed of individuals who are experts in their field and have a strong interest in NKDEP.

The meeting discussion focused on the chronic care model (CCM) and how it can help guide NKDEP's priorities and activities. Also on the agenda were presentations from several Federal agencies about the latest in CKD research, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Chronic Kidney Disease Initiative and the NIDDK's Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study.

Meeting materials, including the agenda, summary report, and CCM presentation by NKDEP Director Dr. Andrew Narva, are now available at www.nkdep.nih.gov/about/panel.htm#meeting.

Feature Article Published in Renal Nutrition Forum
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) recently released its Fall 2007 issue of Renal Nutrition Forum, which contains a feature article written by Dr. Narva. The article summarizes insights from NKDEP's roundtable discussion with renal dietitians about increasing early nutrition intervention with CKD patients. Participants spoke about the important role dietitians play in primary care treatment of CKD, the need to provide education and resources to non-renal dietitians, and the importance of establishing relationships with primary care providers to increase referrals. The article was approved by ADA as continuing education for dietitians.

NIDDK Releases 2007 Annual Data Report
The United States Renal Data System's (USRDS) nineteenth Annual Data Report (ADR) is now available. The ADR, which is funded by NIDDK, is the most comprehensive report of kidney failure-related data. New to the ADR is a chapter focused on a timely area of concern related to the public health of the kidney disease population. In this edition, the Emerging Issues chapter looks in detail at the mortality during the first year of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) treatment—an area of particular concern, as it has improved little over the past decade. Other topics include projected ESRD counts and costs through 2020, and data on the care and outcomes of patients affected by Hurricane Katrina.

For more information or to order the report, visit www.usrds.org.

NIDDK Website Features Health Information in Spanish
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has launched a new portal to feature Spanish-language materials and resources about kidney and urologic diseases on its website. The portal is available at
www.kidney-espanol.niddk.nih.gov.

People looking for information about kidney disease in Spanish can now go directly to the Spanish-language portal page, where they will find an A to Z list of topics and titles. Also, the online system for ordering NIDDK materials now includes descriptions in Spanish of available publications to help visitors choose the resources they want. The National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse has 18 kidney and urologic publications in Spanish and will be adding more in the future, including one-page fact sheets that are part of the NIDDK's Awareness and Prevention series.

To help people order materials in Spanish, two full-time bilingual information specialists respond to requests for health information. In the past 12 months, more than 17,500 Spanish-language publications were ordered through the three NIDDK clearinghouses. The NIDDK responded to more than 700 information requests in Spanish during that time.

The NIDDK website also links to the Spanish-language pages for NKDEP at www.nkdep.nih.gov/espanol and MedlinePlus at www.medlineplus.gov/spanish.

2008 World Kidney Day
The second annual World Kidney Day will be held on March 13, 2008. World Kidney Day is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF).

The purpose of World Kidney Day is to raise awareness about the importance of the kidneys and to spread the message that kidney disease is common, harmful and treatable.

For more information about World Kidney Day, please visit www.worldkidneyday.org.

Happy Holidays!
