New Consult Letter Template for Nephrologists
The Renal Physicians Association and NKDEP have developed an on-line Consult Letter Template to facilitate communication between nephrologists and primary care providers (PCPs). The letter largely uses the KDOQI classification developed by the National Kidney Foundation. Using drop down menus and check boxes, nephrologists can efficiently delineate areas of care and quickly generate a consult letter to send to their patients' PCPs. To access this tool, visit www.nkdep.nih.gov or www.renalmd.org.

NKDEP National Launch Scheduled For June
NKDEP will be launching the You Have The Power To Prevent Kidney Disease campaign this June. We will be working with the national media and partner organizations reach African Americans at risk for kidney disease and their primary care providers. The campaign aims to increase awareness of the seriousness of kidney disease, the importance of testing those at high risk, and the availability to prevent or slow kidney failure. We have tried to make it as easy as possible for organizations to tailor their participation depending on their current activities, available time, and other resources. If your organization is interested in participating in the campaign, please contact Elisa Gladstone at gladstonee@extra.niddk.nih.gov or (301) 435-8116.

NKDEP Evaluation
NKDEP will be completing its evaluation of the pilot sites over the next few months. Throughout May, we will be collecting follow-up data from members of our target audiences in the pilot cities and composite control site. In all, over 2000 10-minute randomly dialed telephone interviews will be completed with African-American adults over age 30. We will also be collecting data from over 600 primary care providers using a survey that can be completed via fax or on the Web. In addition to conducting the follow-up survey, NKDEP is also completing its process evaluation of the pilot sites. Over the past year, NKDEP has interviewed coalition members and kept track of activities, materials usage, and media outreach in each pilot city. All of this information will be compiled and analyzed to help us improve our efforts and launch an effective national program.

Steering Committee Meeting
On June 11, 2004, the third annual Steering Committee meeting will be held in Bethesda, MD at the NIH campus from 9 am to 3:00 pm. The meeting will focus on this year's accomplishments and future plans for the program. During the meeting, we will honor and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the volunteers in each of the four pilot sites.
