Organic Electronics: A Cleaner Substitute for Silicon Organic Electronics: A Cleaner Substitute for Silicon

Lance Frazer

Abstract

Breakthroughs in manipulating plastic polymers could make computers and other electronic devices more environmentally friendly and cheaper to produce. Using these carbon/hydrogen/oxygen-based polymers to create electrical components is the domain of so-called organic electronics. Scientists have created photovoltaic power sources and flexible display screens that weigh less than conventional items, while a new organic electro-optic modulator could speed communications by reducing the transfer time between electronic and fiber-optic networks. Once durability and cost issues are resolved, this field has the potential for changing the face of the electronics industry and making it cleaner in the process.
