Short-Circuiting Environmental Protections; The Cleanroom: How Clean? Short-Circuiting Environmental Protections; The Cleanroom: How Clean?

David J. Tenenbaum

Abstract

Computer chip production is shifting to Asian-Pacific countries in part due to more favorable tax rates and a surging demand for chips in the region. Environmental and worker health advocates allege that this move is also motivated by more lenient regulatory structures in these countries and point to pollution problems similar to those that occurred in Silicon Valley in the United States.
