Disrupting a Delicate Balance: Environmental Effects on the Thyroid Disrupting a Delicate Balance: Environmental Effects on the Thyroid

Valerie Brown

Abstract

The thyroid gland influences many of the major bodily systems, and thyroid hormone imbalances can cause a number of symptoms. Environmental impacts on the thyroid can be especially detrimental in fetal and childhood development, when a lack of thyroid hormone can result in neurodevelopmental problems. Scientists are working to pinpoint which chemicals disrupt thyroid function, and the mechanisms by which they work. Developing more relevant research models and assays and bridging differences among toxicology and endocrinology methodologies are but two of the issues thyroid researchers faces as they work to more clearly understand this complex system.
