Learning Disabilities Research Centers

This research center consortium was initially solicited in 1988 under the solicitation Learning Disabilities: Multidisciplinary Research Centers (HD-88-03) and is supported by the NICHD Child Development and Behavior Branch. The first center grants were awarded in 1989 and 1990. The second re-competition of the centers program was funded in 2006 and awards were made to one continuing center at University of Colorado and three new centers at Florida State University, Kennedy Krieger Institute/John Hopkins University and the University of Houston.

The centers were charged with developing new knowledge about the causes or origins, developmental courses, and response to instruction characteristics of children, adolescents, and adults with learning disabilities. Across the four centers, these research teams are conducting research on the development and validation of classification systems and definitions for LDs affecting oral language abilities related to reading and writing, basic reading skills, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and written expression.
