Oncology Nursing Lecture

Dr. Handy has been in oncology nursing for more than 30 years. She has worked in acute care, ambulatory care, radiation therapy, stem cell transplant, and home care. She is currently an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at the St. Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York City. In addition, she serves on the faculty of the Health Advocacy Program at Sarah Lawrence College. She has presented nationally on a wide variety of cancer related topics, among them site-specific cancers and side effect prevention and management.

Her educational preparation has been at New York University, which granted her a bachelor’s, a master’s, and most recently a doctorate, all in nursing. Her research interests are side effect prevention and management, pain management, and end of life issues. The April, 2006 issue of the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing contains her most recent article, “Ocular Changes with Oxaliplatin”, which she co-authored with two colleagues. Her honors include a nomination as New York State Nurse of Distinction and the receipt of a New York State Senate Liberty Award.

The primary educational objective of these seminars is to provide new information, ideas, and discussion about timely areas of research with impact on the field of oncology. A secondary educational objective is to elicit participation by individuals from all divisions of the intramural NCI, and thus facilitate more interactions among investigators and groups in the NCI.
