AIDSinfo's Publication Ordering Policy Goes "Green"
Starting in January, AIDSinfo will no longer provide hard copies of the HIV/AIDS Treatment Guidelines via ordering from the Web site. In the future, hard copies will only be available by contacting AIDSinfo directly via telephone (1-800-448-0440) or e-mail (Contactus@aidsinfo.nih.gov).
This step is being taken as part of an effort to reduce AIDSinfo's carbon footprint; the printing and shipping of thousands of copies of guidelines per year produce a significant amount of greenhouse gases. Additionally, the guidelines are updated frequently and constant reproduction of hard copies is not conducive to maintaining "living documents" such as the treatment guidelines.
Guidelines will continue to be available for download from the Web site or by e-mail from the Pubs Ordering section at no cost to users. (Or the environment!)
Winter 2009 Issue of Mental Health AIDS Released
Biopsychosocial therapy involves assessing an individual patient's biological, psychological, and social condition to help determine the best treatment. Mental Health AIDS is a quarterly biopsychosocial research update on HIV and mental health sponsored by the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This publication is provided free of charge through the SAMHSA Web site in both PDF and HTML formats.
The Winter 2009 issue features the "HIV-Related Mental Health Interventions Delivered Through Telephone & Internet Technology" Tool Box. This tool box evaluates telephone-based intervention research designed to treat depressive symptoms in men and women living with HIV. In addition, the tool box includes information about the use of Internet technology to evaluate depressive symptoms and generate self-care management strategies for those living with HIV.

NIDA Requests Submissions for 2009 Avant-Garde Award for Innovative Research in the Treatment of HIV/AIDS in Drug Abusers
"As many as three scientists will receive up to $500,000 each year for five years for potentially groundbreaking approaches to the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS in drug abusers. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), created the Avant-Garde Award to stimulate high-impact research into the link between drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. NIDA is now accepting submissions for its 2009 awards program."
Female Genital Lining Not an Effective Barrier to HIV Infection
"It's long been believed that the normal lining of the vaginal tract was an effective barrier to HIV during sexual intercourse, because the large HIV virus couldn't penetrate the tissue. But the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine researchers found that HIV can penetrate normal, healthy genital tissue to a depth where it can get to immune cells and infect them."
