New Diabetes Prevention and Control PowerPoint Slide Sets Available Online

Screen of Diabetes: The Science of Control Presentation NDEP's newest resource is a series of PowerPoint slide sets that contain information on the latest U.S. diabetes prevalence and incidence rates, diabetes management, and diabetes prevention. In addition to Diabetes: The Numbers (introduced in January 2007), the second and third slide sets in the series are now available on the NDEP website. Diabetes: The Science of Control, contains information about the science Screen of Diabetes: The Science of Prevention Presentation of diabetes control and highlights NDEP's materials for consumers with diabetes and health care professionals. Diabetes: The Science of Prevention, gives an overview of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) as well as information about NDEP's prevention campaign materials for high risk audiences. Each PowerPoint slide set in the series is designed as a resource for health care professionals, diabetes educators, and students. Slides can be downloaded as an entire presentation or used individually. May is Older Americans Month and Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Cover of The Power To Control Diabetes is in Your Hands Publication Help NDEP celebrate Older Americans Month this May! This year’s theme is “Older Americans: Making Choices for a Healthier Future.” For more information on the U.S. Administration on Aging's campaign, planned activities, and promotion materials, click here. The website features information about the history of Older Americans Month, as well as downloadable materials. NDEP also has campaigns tailored specifically for older adults: The Power To Control Diabetes is in Your Hands for diabetes control and It’s Not Too Late to Prevent Diabetes. NDEP is promoting a new feature article, “Preventing Diabetes for Our Future and Theirs: The Diabetes Epidemic Among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders” during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The article explains that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, but that it is possible to lower their risk. The article also highlights NDEP’s resources for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, including tip sheets available in English and 15 Asian and Pacific Islander languages. We encourage you to use the article in your own publication, or use the information to write your own article. One Call One Click Diabetes Information Coming Soon… One Call. One Click. Branding Campaign

One Call. One Click. is NDEP’s first-ever branding campaign to position NDEP as "Your #1 Source of Free Diabetes Information." As part of NDEP's new effort to "promote, promote, promote," new One Call. One Click. media kits will be distributed to general media, health care professional media, and you – our partners! Media kits will include new print, online, and radio PSAs. The One Call. One Click. campaign will launch on June 7 at NDEP’s Steering Committee Meeting in Washington, D.C. and media kits will be distributed to partners in late June. By using our promotional tools, everybody wins. June is the time to recognize National Men’s Health Week and NDEP will promote a new feature article, “ATTENTION MEN! Control Your Diabetes. For Life… And For Your Family” that emphasizes the link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease in men.

ADA Launches New Prevention Initiative

CheckUp America - Know Your Risk, Lower Your Risk for Diabetes and Heart DiseaseIn an effort to educate and empower people to take action for their health, the American Diabetes Association has launched CheckUp America, a national prevention initiative aimed at helping Americans learn how to lower their risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. To support CheckUp America, ADA will also develop a new public service campaign entitled “Now or Later,” to reach health care professionals and the general public about the urgent need for people to have regular checkups and reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The campaign will include print, TV, and radio PSAs, along with collateral educational materials that will be promoted to patients with diabetes, those at high risk for diabetes, and health care professionals. NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin Rodgers Interviewed on NIH Radio NIH Radio Banner

Griffin P. Rodgers, M.D., M.A.C.P., Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, recently promoted NDEP’s campaigns for high-risk minority audiences on NIH radio during National Minority Health Month. Explaining that certain ethic groups such as African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians and Alaska Natives, and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have an increased risk for developing pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes and how they can reduce it, the interview can be found in its entirety by clicking here.

 


New CMS Diabetes Materials

CMS LogoNew materials are available from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and are designed to explain Medicare coverage of diabetes supplies and services in the Original Medicare Plan, also known as “fee-for-service.” These resources will provide Medicare patients with answers to the questions: “What diabetes supplies and services does Medicare help pay for?” and “Where can I get more information?”

National Women’s Health WeekNational Women's Health Week May 13-19, 2007 It's Your Time! Pamper Your Mind, Body, and Spirit

The 8th annual National Women’s Health Week kicks off on Mother’s Day, May 13 and will be celebrated until May 19. With the theme “It’s Your Time: Pamper Your Mind, Body, and Spirit,” National Women’s Health Week calls on women to take time for their health and encourages them to take simple steps for a longer, healthier, and happier life. There are several ways you can be a National Women’s Health Week partner, including: encouraging women in your community to visit their health care professional, holding a free screening or health event, putting information in your newsletter, disseminating women’s health information, or having a display in your facilities.

2007 Innovation in Prevention Awards

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is now accepting nominations for the 2007 Innovation in Prevention Awards, which seek to identify and celebrate organizations that have implemented innovative and creative chronic disease prevention and health promotion programs. To be eligible, a program must address at least one of the following risk categories: obesity, physical activity, or nutrition. In addition, nominated programs must be in operation for at least two years, must explicitly state funding sources, and cannot have previously received this award. Awards will be given in the following categories:
