Basic Sciences
The laboratory has several basic science training programs which focus in three major areas, Cardiac metabolism and physiology, Cardiac MRI and Imaging physics. These positions are of several categories: Individual Research Training Awards (IRTA), Staff Fellow, Visiting Fellowships, Visiting Associates and National Research Council Fellowships. All of these fellowships are initial two year appointments with potential extensions for an additional 3 years. All fellows receive a broad exposure to the physiological sciences as well as non-invasive technology with concentrated exposure to NMR, MRI and optical spectroscopy and imaging. A general small group course on NMR is provided each fall (4 hours/week) while a physiology program is presented in the spring (4 hours/week). A lively bi-weekly seminar program provides insights from other investigators in the field. Specific projects and programs can be evaluated from the project descriptions of the senior investigators and the laboratory bibliography. Clinical Sciences
The Laboratory has initiated a clinical program in Cardiac MRI. This program concentrates on the clinical application of MRI to the cardiovascular system. The goal of this program is to enpower the clinical fellow in Cardiac MRI to permit future use and application of this powerful technology in their practice. This program includes training and research opportunities in cardiac function, perfusion, viablity and angiography using state-of-the-art MRI technology. The training program includes formal lecture series as well as hands-on clinical and research opportunities on industry standard equipment. Basic insights into the physics of MRI and its application are provided as well as a working knowledge of the hardware and software. Fellowships are available for cardiologists, radiologists or any medical speciality in this one or two year training program. Shorter training programs are under development. Pre-Doctoral
Pre-IRTA awards are available which provide funding for graduate students to conduct part of their graduate research programs at the NIH. These awards are for those who have completed course work and can do research full time. We have used this mechanism to support the research efforts of several graduate students in the past. Fellowship Training Opportunities
Integrative Physiology Section Senior Staff Scientist
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics (Chief, Robert S. Balaban Ph.D.), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services is seeking applications for a Staff Scientist to work in the area of cell biology or mitochondria biochemistry/bioenergetics. The focus of this position will be the evaluation of mitochondrial function in health and model disease states within intact cardiac cells both in vitro and in vivo. Technical approaches will include both single and multi-photon dynamic fluorescence techniques together with more conventional approaches in cell biology. Applicants with experience in single and multi-photon confocal microscopy, optical spectroscopy or mitochondrial energetics will be desirable. Applicants must have a Ph.D.
The Laboratory is equipped with both conventional confocal and multiphoton microscopes modified for in vivo studies that are dedicated to this project. In addition, psec laser based ED-FRAP and FRET systems are available for kinetic studies. Core services in whole animal imaging (MRI, CT, US etc), proteomics and genomics are available for correlative studies.
This is a senior scientist position in the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics that is associated with a competitive salary commensurate with the candidates experience and qualifications under Title 42. Appointees must be US citizens, resident aliens, or nonresident aliens with a valid employment-authorized visa.

Cardiac MRI Staff Scientist
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health welcomes your application for a MRI staff scientist position in the field of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. NHLBI is one of the premier research sites of cardiac MRI with several clinical human scanners dedicated to this field, and very active programs in technical development and clinical evaluation. These include quantitative assessments of cardiac function, perfusion and viability. Rapid real-time cardiac imaging and interventional procedures are also being explored. The NIH campus is situated in Bethesda, Maryland, a town close to the culturally active Washington DC metropolitan area as well as the scenic Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.
The incumbent will be conducting innovative research and development on state of the art clinical scanners, with the aim of patient applications. A Doctoral or Master's degree with experience in MR software development is required. Familiarity with the Siemens software environment is desirable. Term and salary of the position are dependent on qualifications.
