Hi, I’m Dr. Griff Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the National Institutes of Health. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Did you know that more than 20 million people have diabetes in this country and another 54 million have pre-diabetes? Type 2 diabetes is common, costly, but controllable. Diabetes is a disease in which blood sugar levels are too high. It causes serious complications such as heart disease and stroke, blindness, kidney failure and lower leg amputation.

To reduce your risk of getting type 2 diabetes, exercise regularly, watch your calories and, if you’re overweight, lose weight.

For more tips, visit the website yourdiabetesinfo.org or call 1-888-693-NDEP. This is Dr. Griff Rodgers. Join me next week for more “Healthy Moments.”
