Senior Investigator Appointment Mechanisms

Senior Investigators are tenured independent investigators who have substantial expertise in and impact on a specific area of biomedical research.

Grade Structure

Positions are ungraded but are normally equivalent to the GS-13 or above.

Positions are graded at GS-13, 14 or 15 level based on OPM classification standards and peer review criteria.

Rank of 05, or 06 is based on the officer’s credentials rather than the position.

Positions are ungraded but are normally equivalent to the GS-15 or above.

Qualifications

Doctoral level degree (MD, DDS or Ph.D.) and additional years of postdoctoral experience relevant to the position.

Must be licensed or registered in a health profession and present additional education and experience relevant to the position.

Supplemental Pay Mechanisms

Recruitment or retention incentives of up to 25% of base pay.

For Physicians PCA (Physicians Comparability Allowance)
Maximum amounts:

  • $14,000 for less than 2 years government service;
  • $30,000* for 2 or more years of government service

*Amounts above $20,000 must meet mission-specific criteria.

3Rs: Recruitment or relocation bonuses or retention allowances of up to 25% of base pay

PSP ( T. 38 Physician Special Pay) For Physicians and Dentists who see patients at least 10% of official time. Pay factors for Physicians*:

  • Full-time Status: $9,000
  • Length of Service: $4,000 (2 yrs.) - $18,000 (15 yrs.)
  • Board Certification:
    • $2,000 (first specialty)
    • $500 (second or subspecialty)
  • Geographic Location: $17,000 (Radiology only)
  • Scarce Medical Specialty: Maximum for specialty:
    • Anesthesiology: $40,000
    • Radiology: $40,000
    • Nuclear Medicine: $30,000
    • Pathology: $20,000
    • Primary Care: $15,000
    • Phys. Med. & Rehab.: $15,000
  • Exceptional Quals.: $15,000
  • Executive Responsibility:
  • Service Chief: $4,500 - $15,000
  • Chief of Staff: $14,500 - $25,000 (Cannot be paid with SMS for the same work hours)
