Emerging Issues for Next Generation Databases

Time and Location: The one-day conference will be held on Friday, April 17, 1998, from 8:30 am until 5:15 pm, at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, CA. The conference is a satellite to Experimental Biology '98, held in the same location from April 18-22, 1998.

Registration: There is no registration fee, but pre-registration is required to guarantee a seat, and is limited to the first 200 persons. Persons who have not registered may attend if space permits. Attendees of the Nutrient Databank Conference who do not wish to attend the Experimental Biology meeting are not required to pay the EB registration fee.

Exhibits and posters: There will not be space for exhibits, but a location to distribute hand-outs will be provided. Poster-boards will not be available, but table-top posters are encouraged. To submit a poster, please send an abstract of 250 words or less (along with your name and address) to:

Electronic submissions are preferred. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is February 1, 1998. The abstract should present findings of research related to nutrient databases. You will be notified promptly if your abstract is accepted.

Conference proceedings: The proceedings of the conference will be made available electronically at the Nutrient Data Laboratory's website (www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp).

Related events: Experimental Biology '98 will be held from Saturday, April 18 through Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at the Moscone Convention Center. For more information, see the EB '98 home page. The registration fee is $140 for participating society members, $200 for nonmembers, and $35 for students. The deadline for advance registration is February 13, 1998. EB '98 will include a workshop on "Applications of the New NCHS Growth Charts" the afternoon of Saturday, April 18th.

A conference on "Functional Foods for Health Promotion: A Public Health Opportunity?" will be held Saturday morning, April 18th. There is no registration fee for this conference.

An optional no-host dinner will be arranged for Friday evening, April 17th. A sign-up sheet will be available at the conference.

Emerging Issues for Next Generation Databases

Learn the latest about Folic Acid database issues as well as the availability and completeness of new Non-Nutritive Food Constituent databases for botanicals & herbal preparations, flavonoid, phytoestrogens, and carotenoids. New information will also be provided on the USDA Food Pyramid Food Servings database and the NCHS Nutrient Supplements database.  The conference program is now available.
