Guidelines for Posting Links to Special Events

The Events section of the NIH home page can be used to post links to selected events of interest to the NIH Community. These guidelines attempt to dispel any confusion about the appropriate use of the NIH Web site to promote an event. Please note that you are responsible for creating and hosting the actual hypertext documents announcing your event. If, after reviewing the guidelines you believe your event should be listed on the NIH News and Events page, please contact the Online Information Branch, OD and provide us with the URL for the event page, give us the date you want it to appear and the date it should be taken down. Our telephone number is 301-435-2932 or you can send e-mail to: Dennis Rodrigues at dr3p@nih.gov or to the Online Information Branch at a olib@od.nih.gov.

The NIH Calendar of Events (or "Yellow Sheet") is the principal means of advertising events at NIH. In particular, the new on-line version of the Calendar is the most complete and current listing of events taking place at or near NIH. The NIH Calendar of Events lists NIH-sponsored meetings and other meetings of interest to both employees and the general public. It is updated daily. If you find that your event should not be listed on the Events section of the NIH home page, advertise it on the Calendar.

While we review each submission on a case-by-case basis, here are the general guidelines we use to determine if an event should be listed on the NIH home page. We post:

  1. Meetings sponsored by NIH. We do not post non-NIH events even if they may be of interest to the NIH community. If we post non-NIH events for one organization or firm we would then have to post items for all outside organizations or firms.
  2. Meetings of special interest to the Office of the Director, NIH.
  3. Meetings sponsored by more than one Institute or Center (IC) or, IC meetings on trans-NIH issues.
  4. Special NIH meetings that have national or international interest.
  5. Meetings that are of interest to a broad segment of the NIH community or the public—if the meeting is of interest only to highly selective group, we recommend targeting the announcement to that group.
  6. Important educational or cultural events that are open to all.
  7. Meetings involving visiting VIPs.
  8. We do not list events that are not open to the public.
  9. We do post events for officially sanctioned NIH groups.
  10. We do not list events that promote commercial products or services.
  11. We do not post information on religious or political events.
