S. 1811—Expanding Research for Women in Trauma Act of 2003

On October 31, 2003, Senator Thomas Daschle (D-SD) and Senator John Edwards (D-NC) introduced S. 1811, the Expanding Research for Women in Trauma Act of 2003. This bill would require the Secretary, in consultation with the Directors of NIMH, NIDA, NIAAA, NCMHD, ORWH, OBSSR, and CDC, OWH, NIOSH, and SAMHSA to make grants and enter into contracts to increase research on the psychological sequelae of violence against women. Provisions of the legislation would require NIH components and other Federal agencies to 1) expand research on special populations and their risk for violence, including adolescents, older women, ethnic minorities, women with disabilities, and other affected populations; 2) increase research on violence against women as a risk factor for various mental and physical health problems; 3) develop and test effective methods of screening for violence in all points of entry to the health care system; and 4) enhance research on socioeconomic and sociocultural correlates of violence. Other provisions would require that awards not exceed $500,000 and that the duration of the grant awards not exceed 5 years. S. 1811 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
