Cardiopulmonary & Critical Care Science
This science area includes research on responses to acute cardiovascular events, chronic management of cardiovascular disease, and responses to acute and chronic pulmonary conditions including COPD, asthma, and other non-infection-caused conditions. In addition, all research related to critical care in response to injury or trauma and transplantation.

Chronic Conditions & Infectious Diseases

This science area includes research on health issues of individuals with arthritis, diabetes, urinary incontinence, digestive disorders, and musculoskeletal disorders. This area also encompasses infectious diseases (other than HIV/AIDS), patient outcomes related to health care delivery, and biodefense.

End of Life & Long Term Care
This science area includes clinical management of physical and psychological symptoms, communication, ethics and clinical decision-making, caregiver support, and care delivery issues at the end of life. This area also includes informal caregiving, ethics and research integrity, and environmental health research.

Neuroscience
This science area includes research on the symptom management and/or prevention of cognitive deficits, neurological conditions, and informal caregiving for persons with these conditions.
