In most cases, letters of intent are not required and are not binding. However, all applications requesting greater than $500,000 in direct costs in any year require prior agreement by NIH staff to accept assignment to that institute or center. Conference Grants
Applications for support of scientific meetings require an acceptance letter from an institute or center.
