What is NIGMS?

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIGMS supports basic research and training nationwide, increasing our understanding of life processes and laying the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.  More information about NIGMS and its mission is available in the NIGMS Overview.

Where is NIGMS located?

NIGMS is located on the main NIH campus in Bethesda, MD, in the suburban Washington, DC, area. NIGMS staff work in the William H. Natcher Building (Building 45). Find directions and maps.

What is the NIGMS budget?

In Fiscal Year 2008, Congress appropriated $1.9 billion to NIGMS.

How many grants does NIGMS fund?

At any given time, NIGMS supports approximately 4,500 research grants—approximately 10 percent of the grants funded by NIH as a whole. NIGMS also supports approximately 25 percent of the trainees who receive assistance from NIH.

What is the organizational structure of NIGMS?

NIGMS is organized into divisions and a center that support research and research training in a range of scientific fields. One division has the specific mission of increasing the number of biomedical and behavioral scientists who are members of underrepresented minority groups. The divisions and center include:
