This manuscript describes the surgical procedures of the Hanaoka
school, which used Chinese herbs as a general anesthetic.
Seishu Hanaoka (1760-1835), a Japanese pioneer
in anesthesia, performed the first breast cancer surgery using
herbal general anesthesia.
