Collaboration in Cyberspace for Healthy People 2010

The health community, professional organizations, State governments, and the public are participating in developing the nation's health agenda for the next decade. Comments on the Healthy People 2010 Objectives: Draft for Public Comment were invited and posted on the Healthy People 2010 website (http://web.health.gov/healthypeople/).

Healthy People, the national prevention initiative that identifies opportunities to improve the health of all Americans, is the United States' contribution to the World Health Organization's "Health for All" strategy. Through its national objectives, the United States provides models for world policy and strategies for population health improvement.

The Healthy People 2010 website posts the complete text of the draft objectives and past and upcoming activities related to the document's development. "Increase Years of Healthy Life" and "Eliminate Health Disparities" are the two interarching goals for the Healthy People 2010 objectives. The objectives are being developed under the leadership of the Healthy People 2010 Consortium and Steering Committee and with collaboration and community participation through focus groups and public meetings as well as the website. Targets regarding weight status can be found within the nutrition focus area in section 2.

The Department of Health and Human Services and other Federal agencies continue to synthesize and refine the objectives of the report. The final Healthy People 2010, to be released January 2000, will emerge as a consensus document that can guide the nation's health agenda into the new millennium.

The website also links to the Healthy People 2000 home page, where users can find activities and publications related to the pursuit of Year 2000 health targets.
