Like heart disease, kidney disease can be silent.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

You may have kidney disease but not know it, because most people do not feel sick until their kidneys are very damaged. So don’t wait for symptoms. If kidney disease runs in your family, or if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease you are at high risk and should get tested. Your doctor should:

  • Order a blood test to measure how well your kidneys are removing waste products.
  • Order a urine test to look for signs of kidney damage.
  • And check your blood pressure.
If you have kidney disease, you could take steps to delay its progression.
