The NIH SBIR/STTR Program

• Intended to support innovative research which has the potential for commercialization, conducted by small businesses.
• Applicants submit a feasibility, or Phase I application, typically seeking up to $100,000 for 6-12 months of research support.
• Successful recipients of Phase I awards may then submit a Phase II application with a commercialization plan, for both a longer duration (usually 2 years) and a larger amount (usually up to $750,000) of support.
• All applications are reviewed by knowledgeable scientists in the relevant field of research, called ‘peer review’.
• The funds for this program are ‘set-aside’ and therefore do not compete with the regular research, training, or other special programs supported by the Institute. The SBIR set-aside is 2.5% of the budget; The STTR program has an annual set-aside of 0.30%.
