Application Resubmissions

Purpose

To enable investigators to resubmit their applications when their initial peer review results are not in the fundable range.

Procedure

NIH allows investigators who have not succeeded in getting funded to resubmit an unsolicited application. Applicants may resubmit applications submitted on January 25, 2009, and later only once with no time limit. Applicants may resubmit applications sent before that date twice and must do so by January 7, 2011.

If your application in response to an RFA did not succeed and you want to submit it again, you must convert it into a new investigator-initiated application.

eRA Commons allows investigators to send a resubmission while the earlier application remains active, so NIAID can fund an earlier application if a resubmission receives a worse score.

Applicants

• For a resubmission, include an introduction just before the beginning of the Research Plan that addresses the previous summary statement and indicate how your resubmission differs. For electronic applications, attach the introduction as a PDF to the field Introduction to Application in the PHS 398 Research Plan component.
• Follow advice in Part 11b. Not Funded, Reapply in the NIH Grant Cycle: Application to Renewal and in the Advice for Resubmission and Unfunded Applicants questions and answers.
• If you are not funded after the initial submission and one revision, you must make a significant change in direction and approach before submitting a new research application. For details, see Option 3: Create a New Application.
