Standard Operating Procedures for 911 Calls at The Children’s Inn

1. Patients or family members residing at The Children’s Inn (TCI) who are experiencing an urgent or emergent medical situation should notify members of the TCI staff immediately.

Notes Regarding 911 Calls

  • The Inn staff will contact NIH EMS at 911 and provide a preliminary description of the acute events and problem.
  • If a TCI resident calls 911 directly from the Inn, the NIH 911 desk is to call back to let the Inn Manager on Duty know they have been summoned.
  • NIH Fire & Rescue will determine if advanced cardiac life support may be required based on the description of medical circumstances provided by TCI staff or resident. If ACLS is indicated, NIH Fire & Rescue will notify Montgomery County EMS in Bethesda.
  • All 911 calls made from an NIH phone automatically go to the NIH fire department first, with assessed need for ACLS determined as above. If Montgomery County EMS receives calls directly from the TCI or cell phones, they are to also notify the NIH fire department.
2. Since EMS has been activated for an acute or emergent concern, all patients will be taken to Suburban hospital ER for further evaluation and disposition management.

3. TCI staff should notify the unit / clinical service to which the patient is assigned of the transport to the ER.

Each clinical service / research program that sees pediatric patients is to provide TCI with information regarding On Call Medical Service Coverage through which the responsible On Call Physician or Attending can be notified via the NIH Page Operator.

4. The Manager On Duty will complete an incident report that is circulated to appropriate TCI staff and is filed with Zulienne and placed in the patient’s TCI file.
