Description
All school-age patients are eligible to attend grades K-12 along with those who wish to work on the GED.
- ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is offered to school-age patients at the discretion of the school director. Please call for a consultation.
- Students are ideally taught from their own textbooks following assignments from their home teachers. Our teachers can provide an appropriate curriculum with the aid of the school's extensive textbook library. Students are encouraged to use the classroom. If that is not possible, they are taught at bedside.
- The grades and credits earned while the student is in the school are transferred to the home schools. When they attend the NIH school, students are not usually considered absent from their home schools for that period.

How to Enroll
A student may enroll in the program by making a request to the social worker, nurse, or physician. These staff members will then notify the school. The school director will interview the student and assign a teacher or teachers. Some parents contact the school directly after getting the school information on the NIH web. At that time, arrangements are made for an appointment during the hospital admission.
For questions or to refer a patient to school, call (301) 496-2077 or email Helen Mays at hmays@mail.cc.nih.gov
