Arranging for Anesthesia services

  • In order to schedule any anesthesia services for your patient a scheduling card placed through CRIS is absolutely necessary. Please order the scheduling card BEFORE the procedure date, and as soon as possible.
  • For procedures performed outside the operating room, a card must also be ordered in CRIS in advance of the procedure date.
  • When a surgical scheduling card has been ordered in CRIS, an anesthesiologist will see the child preoperatively and discuss with the patient, parents, and nursing staff all the needed preparation.
  • Ideally the parents should be interviewed by an anesthesiologist prior to the day of the procedure so that NPO instructions can be ordered by the anesthesiologist and questions answered. In general, we follow the Clinical Center NPO sedation NPO sedation guidelines.
  • For procedures done on an outpatient basis, it is important for the primary team to coordinate the various steps to be taken on the day of the procedure with the parents, nursing unit involved, operating room, as well as with the location where the procedure will take place.
  • We strive to schedule all outpatient invasive procedures and sedation recovery in the 1NW Day Hospital. Please also contact the 1NW Day Hospital at 301-451-7727.
