Arranging for a bed on 1NW inpatient or day hospital

  • Phone the appropriate pediatric area to assure bed availability for the date you wish to admit.
  • Please call for bed availability before scheduling a patient for tests or travel.
  • Please call and cancel if plans change because others may be waiting for a bed.
  • Be sure to mention any special needs of the patient (i.e., VRE isolation, need for a handicap bathroom). If a bed is available it will be held for you while you complete the pre-admission form and send it to the unit.
  • The pediatric pre-admit form(PDF Version PDF Icon) should be completed fully so that the ward team can plan properly for the patient’s needs.
  • The completed pre-admit form should be submitted to the clinical manager.

New protocols
New protocols should be discussed with one of the Nurse Managers so nursing can plan properly for your patients’ needs.

Ongoing protocols
If a protocol team knows that there will be an admission every week, a bed can be held until you have a patient’s name. This type of agreement needs to be approved by the nurse manager.

Bed priority
Priority for beds is given to children under 18. Patients over 18 may be moved if there is a need for a pediatric patient to be admitted.

Arrangements for parents of pediatric inpatients

  • Sleep-in accommodations are available for only one parent
  • Parents should be discouraged from bringing other family members, especially other children.
  • If other children are brought to the Clinical Center, the parent must bring a second adult to be with them at the Children’s Inn. (Priority for beds at the Children’s Inn is given to outpatient families).
  • Additional family members are allowed to stay at the Clinical Center only in an emergency situation.
